The device can be used for inspecting a body (12) for internal flaws (14) and can be mounted on a surface of the body. The device includes a first housing (16) supporting a transducer (22) in relation to the surface being inspected and a second housing (18) supporting and positioning a liquid crystal display (26). The two housings are adjustable by a connector (20) for fixing their positions in reflection-receiving relation. The liquid crystal display housing (18) is a hollow tube having a viewing end (18a) and a surface contacting end (18a), the display being positioned intermediate the ends. The contacting surface is constructed to be acoustically coupled to the surface of the body and a variable focal length ultrasonic lens (30) is positioned between the coupling and liquid crystal display with acoustic transmission means being provided for transmitting sonic energy from the surface through the lens and to the display where it can be viewed. Optical enhancement means (32, 34, 36, 38, 40) are provided at the viewing end of the housing for assuring a suitable visual image on the display.
