Prodn. of a fuel-grade mixt. of methanol and higher alcohols is carried out by (a) subjecting synthesis gas contg. CO and H2 to an alcohol synthesis to produce an effluent contg. MeOH, higher alcohols, H2O, and unreacted synthesis gas; (b) cooling the effluent and subjecting it to a shift conversion to produce an effluent contg. MeOH, higher alcohols, unreacted synthesis gas, CO2, and a trace of H2O; (c) cooling the effluent and seperating it into a liq. phase comprising a fuel-grade alcohol mixt. and a gas phase comprising CO,H2, and CO2; (d) passing the gas phase through an absorber to remove CO2; and (e) recycling part of the purified gas to (a) and the purified liq. to (d). |
