PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate raw material for agricultural chemicals in high yield at a low cost, by hydrolyzing an optically active sulfonic acid ester under neutral or acidic conditions. CONSTITUTION:An optically active sulfonic acid ester of formula I (X is lower alkyl which may be substituted by a halogen or phenyl which may have methyl, F, Cl or Br at the p-position) is hydrolyzed under neutral or acidic conditions at 20-100 deg.C, preferably 70-100 deg.C. Calcium carbonate or barium carbonate, etc. is present as a capturing agent for sulfonic acid formed as a by-product in the hydrolysis reaction, and if necessary a solvent, e.g. acetone, other than water is used to carry out the reaction to afford the aimed optically active substance of formula II having an inverted asymmetric center.
