PURPOSE:To prepare the titled compound by demethylating the bismethohalide of the titled compound with a specific aliphatic amine, recovering the amine economically from the reaction mixture after the reaction by treating the mixture with a specific amount of an alkali metal hydroxide, and reusing the recovered amine to the reaction. CONSTITUTION:The titled compound is prepared by reacting the compound of formula (X is halogen) with an aliphatic amine having a boiling point of 40- 170 deg.C under atmospheric pressure and containing 1-2 primary amino groups in the molecule, preferably ethylenediamine or propanediamine, etc. In the above reaction, 10-55wt%, based on the amount of water in the reaction system, of an alkali metal hydroxide is added to the reaction system after the reaction, and the liquid phase is separated and recovered. Thereafter, the separated liquid phase is distilled to obtain a fraction having a boiling point of <=170 deg.C under atmospheric pressure (amines) and a fraction having a boiling point of >170 deg.C, and the former fraction is reused to the above reaction. Since the amine can be recovered and reused in high efficiency by simple separation procedure, the objective compound can be prepared economically.
