PURPOSE:To provide a sliding material which has excellent resistance to seizure by using an Al alloy dispersed therein with specific hard coarse particles as a base metal, and forming a sliding surface constituted of the hard coarse particles of which the greater part are approximately plane and an Al2O3 layer thereon. CONSTITUTION:The base metal of a sliding material of which at least a part of the surface is used as a sliding surface has the structure dispersed with hard coarse particles of primary crystal Si, Al-Mn, Al-Cr, etc. in the matrix of Al or an Al alloy, and is, for example, an ''Aldur'' alloy. The hard coarse particles are about 300Hv and about >=10mu average grain size. The sliding surface projects from the matrix of base metal and is constituted of the hard coarse particles (having 10-100mu average grain size and having the same properties as those of the base material) of which the top ends of at least the majority are approximately plane and the Al2O3 layer formed by oxidation such as anodization on the surface part of the matrix of base metal around the hard coarse particles.
