PURPOSE:To mix uniformly whiskers which are particularly difficult to mix uniformly among short fibers and matrix powder by mixing the shiskers and desired powder in an org. solvent and evaporating away the org. solvent. CONSTITUTION:Whiskers are passed through a 0.2-1.0mm. sieve by which the whiskers are unfastened and the whiskers heavily entangled and lumped to >=1mm. are removed. The whiskers after the above-mentioned treatment and desired powder, above all, metallic powder are separately or simultaneously charged into an org. solvent and are mixed to prepare a suspension. The suspension is heated to evaporate the solvent, by which the uniform powder mixture composed of the whiskers and the matrix powder consisting of the metallic powder is obtd. For example, SiC whiskers are used as the above-described whiskers and, for example, Al alloy powder of the AA alloy symbol 7,000 system is used as the metallic powder. The org. solvent, for example, acetone, having <=100 deg.C b.p. and consisting essentially of constituting atoms of C, H and O is used.
