A fuel injection system is proposed which serves for the fuel supply of an internal combustion engine. The fuel injection system comprises a metering and distributing valve (1) with post-connected control valves (13), which can be influenced by the fuel pressure in a differential pressure control line (21). The differential pressure control line (21) fits by way of a connecting line (22, 25, 19 or 19', 19) on the fuel supply line (3) and on the other hand can be relieved by way of a control throttle (23). In the parts (22, 25) of the connecting line to the control pressure valve (20) a shut-off or pressure control valve (9) is arranged, which closes in the event of an interruption of the fuel delivery so that the fuel pressure in the differential pressure control line (21) can be decreased and the control valves (13) open and the pressure can be equalised on both sides of the valve seats (16). In another embodiment a solenoid valve (9') is arranged in a line (19') to the line (19), which valve also closes in the event of an interruption of the fuel delivery and permits relieving of the fuel pressure in the differential pressure control line (21).
