A method of producing powdered coatings on a substrate, in which the coating has a fine structure determined by the form of the boundary layers between particles and/or agglomerates of particles in the layer utilises a powdered material in which adsorbates are physically and chemically bonded to the surfaces of the particles before they are applied to the substrate and melted or fused onto its surface. The physical treatment of the coating material which influences the physically bound adsorption only modifies the adsorption coating on the particles to a degree at which a particular state of modification is reached; this state of the adsorption layer on the particles is then maintained until they are applied onto the substrate. Pref. in order to achieve bonding boundary coatings between particles and/or agglomerates of particles, the coating material is dried and the atomised coating material is then maintained dry until it is applied to the substrate. Sintered and similar powdered coatings of a desired fine structure are obtd. without adversely affecting the other coating properties. If necessary, the original physical adsorption coating is removed from the particles by a desorption process and then the required adsorption coating is applied to them. The method can be used for fluidised bed coating, gun coating, etc.
|
