M-cresol moiety and p-cresol moiety in a mixture of m- and p-cresols, are separated by subjecting the mixture to nitration and sepg. p-nitro m-cresol. (I) is an inter. in the mfr. of agricultural chemicals and is obtained without sepg. the m- and p-cresol.
