PURPOSE:To detect the height and the external shape of an object in a small scale constitution by irradiating light in time division to the object in at least two directions and to form in time division at least two types of shadow corresponding to the height and the external shape of the object. CONSTITUTION:The light is irradiated from a light source 2 to the side face of a rectangular matter 1. Thus a shadow SHD1 corresponding to the height (h) and the vertical width (y) of the matter 1 is formed on a base plate 3. An image 10 of the matter 1 and an image 11 corresponding to the SHD1 are formed to an image pickup device 4. At the same time, the light is irradiated to the side surface of the matter 1 from a light source 5. Thus a shadow SHD2 corresponding to the height (h) and the horizontal width (x) of the matter 1 is formed on the base plate 3. Then the image 10 of the matter 1 and an image 12 corresponding to the SHD2 are formed to the device 4. The two types of pictures obtained in time division are put on each other and filtered to extract only images 11 and 12, and the form of an object to be detected can be decided.
