PURPOSE:To characterize the excellent advantage of vertical magnetic recording system for short wavelength recording and to improve the durability by providing a magnetic layer comprising a crystal in a columnar structure tilted at the angle of a specific range in the direction of movement of a head and bringing the direction of the C axis of the crystal of columnar struction into the magnetizing direction. CONSTITUTION:Assuming the arrow mark be the direction of movement of a magnetic head, and making an angle theta between the C axis 2 of the crystal grains 1 having a columnar structure and a normal line erected onto a face of a base 3, 5 deg.<=theta<=35 deg., then the usefulness of short wavelength recording is maintained because the output is nearly within a measuring error with respect to the output at the ideal state of complete vertical magnetization. Although the reason why no flaw occurs on the tape surface with the inclination of >=5 deg. is not clear, a trigger to cause the flaw at the post or the like where a force is exerted to stand up columnar columns in the running system when the tilt attains to >=25 deg., where the angle of the C axis is an average value. As to a ferromagnetic layer used herein, a layer where about 20% of Cr is added to Co to decrease the saturation of magnetization and attain magnetization in the direction of the C axis is used typically. |
