PURPOSE:To form an optical modulator which is capable of executing quickly a measurement and a control by providing an acoustic wave-electricity converting element on the side face opposite to the side face on which an electricity- acoustic wave converting element of an acoustic optical material is provided. CONSTITUTION:An acoustic wave-electricity converting element 3 is provided on the side face of an acoustic optical material 2 of the opposite side to an electricity-acoustic wave converting element 1. This converting element 3 converts an acoustic wave 11 which is generated from the converting element 1 and propagated in a medium, to an electric signal 14. The acoustic wave generated from the converting element 1 interferes with an incident light 12, goes into the converting element 3 and is converted to the electric signal 14, but since a relation of the electric signal 14 and a diffracted light 13 is not influenced by a conversion efficiency of the converting element 1, the influence of a heat time constant, etc. does not go in. Accordingly, a quick response which is not influenced by the heat time constant is obtained, and a measurement and a control is executed quickly. |
