A hole is drilled in the end of the electrode. This can be made of Mallory-copper. A pin of tungsten or a tungsten alloy e.g. tungsten-thorium is pressed into the electrode to such a depth that it is flush with the end-plane of the electrode. The cross-sectional area of the inserted pin is 20-80 (35-65)% of the surface area of the end.
