PURPOSE:To obtain a high-glass transition point polyester-amide having toughness and chemical resistance as well as excellent rigidity, heat resistance and low moisture absorption, by copolymerizing a specified polyamide-forming component with an ester-forming component. CONSTITUTION:A polyester-amide comprising 5-80wt% ester units of formula IVand 95-20wt% amide units of formula V is obtained by esterifying the following starting materials A-C at 200-300 deg.C and atmospheric pressure in the absence of water in the presence of an esterification catalyst and melt-polycondensing the produced ester in vacuum at 230-350 deg.C: (A) a diol of formula I (wherein l and m are each 0-3, R1 is a 1-4C alkyl, alkoxy or a halogen, and n1 is 0-4), (B) a diamine of formula II (wherein R3 and R4 are each a 1-4C alkyl, alkoxy, or a halogen and n3 and n4 are each 0-4), and (C) a dicarboxylic acid of formula III (wherein R2 is a 1-4C alkyl, alkoxy, or a halogen, and n2 is 0-4). The polymerization proceeds uniformly without phase separation, so that it is possible to produce a high-polymerization degree polymer by a simplified process.
