PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound having affinity for water ad physiological activity by a simple process in high yield, by reacting a trihalogenohydrogermanium with methyl vinyl ketone, hydrolyzing the prepared compound, oxidizing and hydrolyzing it. CONSTITUTION:A trihalogenohydrogermanium shown by the formula GeHX3 (X is halogen) is reacted with methyl vinyl ketone shown by the formula CH2= CHCOCH3 to give a beta-methylcarbonylethyl germanium shown by the formula X3GeCH2CH2COCH3, which is hydrolyzed in the presence of preferably about 10 times as much as water, and, if necessary, HCl, H2SO4, etc., to prepare a bis- beta-methylcarbonylethyl germanium sesquioxide. This compound is oxidized and hydrolyzed (tert-butylhydroperoxide-caustic potash is preferably used), to give bis-beta-ethylcarboxylic acid germanium sesquioxide shown by the formula II.
