The invention relates to a method for sealing off a shaft relative to a housing for roll stands and rope- or cable-making machines. The aim of the invention is to increase the service life and reduce the outlay involved in manufacture and installation. The object of the invention is to provide a method which ensures sealing irrespective of the rotation of the high-speed shaft and prevents evaporation of the sealing medium. In the method, which is based on a magnet system, the features according to the invention consist in that the carrier liquid for the magneto fluids has a boiling point lower than that of the gas/liquid or gas/solids mixture. This boiling point is between 273 K and 420 K with an evaporation number of between 10 and 115. The carrier liquid evaporates after each introduction operation. Introduction of the magneto fluids continues until the solids content of the magneto fluids introduced into the gap fills the said gap to a range of from 8 nm to 15 nm. The area of application of the invention is in roll stands and rope- or cable-making machines.
