In sawing machines with a movable saw unit (2), the feed path of the latter can be controlled depending on the workpiece length. Successive spaced position markings (7) are provided in the displacement region of the saw unit (2) on the support table (1) for the workpieces (4) and/or on a compressed beam (3) extending in the feed direction of the saw unit (2) or on an access guard strip securely connected to said beam. An input keyboard (8) corresponding to the position markings (7) is arranged on the control panel (6) of the sawing machine for preselecting the cutting range. The required cutting range can be determined by placing the workpiece on the support table (1) with the aid of the position markings (7). A movement of the saw unit (2) in this cutting range is initiated by actuating the corresponding input keyboard (8). <IMAGE>
