For producing dam-building and backfill materials, particularly for underground mining, consisting of hydraulically setting binders and, if appropriate, additives, a process is used in which carbon-containing gangue material, for example flotation gangue from coal dressing having a grain size below 10 mm is fired at a temperature from 800 to 1100 DEG C, preferably from 820 to 980 DEG C, until the coal is substantially fully burned, preferably in a fluidised bed with addition of limestone, it being possible for cement to be added to the finely ground material.
