A system is proposed which serves to wipe windows, in particular of motor vehicles, the windows being arranged in a movable, preferably pivotable fashion, with respect to an opening in a vehicle body and a sub-element of the window or of a frame surrounding the said window overlapping a section of an opening frame. The wiping system has a rotatably driven wiper shaft which bears a wiper which rests on the window to be wiped. The wiper shaft penetrates the opening frame and is mounted therein. So that the wiper shaft can also be arranged in the overlapping region, it is divided transversely with respect to its axis of rotation, one shaft component being mounted on the window and the other shaft component being mounted on the opening frame. The two shaft components are connected to one coupling half each. The two coupling halves engage with one another when the opening is closed. When the window is moved into the open position, the coupling is released.
