A device for illuminating passive displays, in particular LCD displays, is proposed, the device being arranged in the shape of a wedge and being mounted below the LCD display. The wedge-shaped device is produced from optically conductive material, and has on its surface grooves on which the light is refracted. The quantity of the output light can be determined by the number of grooves and by the depth of the incision. The grooves are arranged circularly, the centre of the circle lying outside the wedge in the direction common to the light source. <IMAGE>
