Anthracyclinone glucuronides, process for their preparation and pharmaceuticals containing them

An anthracyclinone glucuronide of the formula <IMAGE> in which R is H, lower alkyl or an alkali metal is described. This compound is prepared by cultivation of Streptomyces peucetius var. vinaceus (DSM 2597), a mutant strain of Streptomyces peucetius var. aureus, under aerobic conditions in an aqueous culture medium which contains assimilable sources of carbon and nitrogen as well as mineral salts, and subsequent workup by processes known per se. The anthracyclinone glucuronide has antitumour properties.
