PURPOSE:To produce a carbon material with a high carbon content having a low viscosity and good thermal stability, by adding a specific amount of a hydrocarbon based solvent to a coal based heavy oil reformed by hydrogenation, and removing insoluble precipitates (insoluble in quinoline). CONSTITUTION:A coal based heavy oil, e.g. coal tar, is hydrogenated in the presence of an iron based catalyst, e.g. sulfurized blast furnace dust, to hydrogenate partially the contained benzene ring and give a naphthenic heavy oil. The resultant reformed heavy oil is then mixed with a hydrocarbon base solvent, e.g. hexane, toluene or light oil, to give 0.98-1.2 (H/C) ratio in the total mixture solution. The resultant insoluble precipitates are then removed, and the mixed hydrocarbon base solvent is separated and removed by distillation to afford the aimed carbon material, e.g. reformed purified heavy oil. |
