PURPOSE:The titled covering material having improved adhesivity to a primarily coated film, consisting of a compound containing a melamine ring and a (meth)acrylic group in the molecule, and an acrylic oligomer or monomer. CONSTITUTION:A hydroxyalkyl(meth)acrylic ester is condensed with a methylol melamine (derivative) shown by the formula (3 or more of R1-6 are CH2OR and the other is H; R is <=4C alkyl) in the presence of an acidic catalyst, to give a compound (A) containing a melamine ring and (meth)acrylic group in the molecule. 100pts.wt. mixture of 5-80wt% component A and (B) 95-20wt% acrylic oligomer having 100-50,000 average molecular weight or acrylic monomer [e.g., ethylene glycol di(meth)acrylate] is blended with 0.1-10pts.wt. photopolymerization to give a covering material for optical fiber. The covering material is applied to the surface of optical fiber which is primarily coated, and is irradiated with radiation and cured.
