The unit is intended for obtaining methane-containing gas from anaerobic fermentation of waste material (21). It comprises a gas collecting tube (1) placed in this material, a gas discharge line (7) and a water separator (4) provided with a water discharge tube (9), a gas inlet (3) and a gas outlet (7). The tube (9) discharges (24) the sepd. water back into the material (21, via 25), preferably in the lower end of the gas-collecting tube (1) through which it may extend co-axially. The separator (4) may contain baffles (10, 14, 15) defining successive compartments (16-19) for the gas flow from the inlet (3) to the outlet line (7) whilst their inclined bottoms (11-13) return the sepd. water to the discharge tube (9).
