The articulated stand comprises two arms (1, 2) which can be pivoted relative to one another and on whose ends there are movable articulated heads (4, 5). A single tensioning lever (6) can be used for simultaneously locking and releasing a central joint (3) and the articulated heads (4, 5). In order to increase the force to be transmitted by the articulated stand there is an axial bolt (7) which presses onto a ball (10) on tensioning via a cam (9) and thereby fixes an articulated head (4) friction-tight via intermediate members (14, 15, 17) in the first arm (1). A sleeve (8) sitting on the axial bolt (7) acts via a cam (11) upon the ball (12) of the second arm (2) and transmits the movement resulting on tensioning on to the articulated head (5) of this arm (2). On tensioning, the two discs (24, 25) of the central joint (3) are at the same time pressed against one another. The articulated stand is suitable, for example, for use in surgery as a retractor holder. It may be provided with a pretensioning spring in order to prevent the arms from tilting downwards immediately when the tensioning lever is released. <IMAGE>
