Tool for producing thermoformed plastic signs comprises a rigid aluminium panel (4) sized to fit at an intermediate level within a simple basin cavity tool in a vacuum forming machine. The panel provides a platform (41) to support one or more matrix blanks (6) comprising a porous base (61) with high relief blocks (62) to represent the detail of the sign. A layer (10) of thermoplastic sheet can be clamped (43) to the rim (46) of the panel (4), and softened by an overhead radiant heater before vacuum is applied via the base tool and 1 or more openings (44) in the platform (41) to draw the sheet on to the contours of the matrix block.
