PURPOSE:The hydrogenolysis of 4,4'-ethylidene-bisphenol is effected in a hydrogen atmosphere in the presence of a catalyst of a metal of group VIII in the periodic table supported on a carrier at a specific temperature to enable economical production of high-purity titled compound through simple operations in high selectivity and yield. CONSTITUTION:The hydrogenolysis of 4,4'-ethylidene-bisphenol is conducted in the presence of a catalyst of a metal of group VIII such as Ni, Ru, Rh or Pt on a carrier such as kieselguhr, alumina or carbonaceous substance in the presence or absence of a solvent at 280-400 deg.C to give the objective compound. The kieselguhr as a carrier preferably has more than 80wt% of silica content and the alumina is in the gamma- or eta-form and has a specific surface area of more than 150<2>/g. EFFECT:The reaction can be carried out at low temperatures almost without coking on the continuous surface of the catalyst, thus enabling durative use of the catalyst for a long period of time. |
