This brake consists of a rotating body (33) mounted like a nut on the shaft (32) to be braked and normally driven by this shaft. The rotating body is fitted with ratchets (55, 58) retained by springs and capable of moving away from the rotating body when the rotational speed of the latter exceeds a certain value, in order to come into abutment against a fixed stop (73), which has the effect of moving the rotating body axially only the shaft (32), in one direction or the other according to the direction of rotation of the shaft, so that one of these brake pads (34, 35) comes to bear against a disc (38, 39) rotationally integral with the shaft (32) but capable of moving axially by compressing springs (40, 41, 42; 43, 44, 45). This brake makes it possible to obtain progressive braking with controlled deceleration regardless of the torque exerted on the shaft. <IMAGE>
