PURPOSE:To stop a pen by simple operation by measuring the time from turning off the pen to turning on the pen in a device recognizing a character on the basis of a holograph. CONSTITUTION:The holograph information C of a character inputted from a tablet part 1 is inputted and held to/in a character recognizing part 2. Simultaneously, the ON/OFF information P of the pen is inputted from the tablet part 1 to a clock part 3 and the time from turning off the pen to turning on the pen is measured. When the measured time value exceeds a fixed threshold, the writing end of one character is decided, a recognition indicating signal R is outputted to a character recognizing part 2 and the stored holograph information C is recognized as one character. When the pen is to be stopped on the way, the time measurement is not executed by pressing a switch 4 and the stop of the pen is prevented from being decided as the writing end of the character.
