The piston ring blank is made with an outer diam. that is greater and an inner diam. that is less than that of the finished ring. Two holes are drilled in the blank, and two parallel pins are extended from retracted position to positions in which they engage in the goles without stressing the blank. A gap is cut in the blank, either before or after the drilling setp, to afford two free ends, such that each hole is adjacent to an end. Thw dpacing of the pins is reduced to hold the ring blank in a partly closed position. One or more of the blanks are clamped in this position and their inner and outer peripheries are made circular.
