<p>Granular glass batch material is introduced onto the surface of molten glass contained in a furnace, where it floats until it melts. The melting rate is improved by: (a) forming a blanket layer of batch material at charging end of furnace; (b) adjusting the height of tapered, vertically mounted, adjustable pot-hole producing members (which are spaced horizontally across the charging end) so that when lowered, they extend a distance equal to the glass batch thickness below the molten glassl (c) periodically lowering the embers to produce pot-holes in the blanket; (d) withdrawing them and (e) feeling the pot-hole glass batch into the interior of the furnace.</p> |
