Title compds. (I; R1=H, halogen, cyano, nitro, acyl; R2=H, halogen, C1-3 alkyl) useful as antiinflammatories, were prepd. by oxidation of II with Br,Cl,I in aq. alkali soln. II was prepd. by the reaction of III with IV in a halgenated hydrocarbon solvents in the presence of AlCl3. Thus, 15.4g biphenyl and 16.2g levulinic acid chloride were reacted in anhyd. Chloribenzene in the presence of anhyd. AlCl3 to give II. The reaction products(II), 33g NaOH and 48g Br were reacted at room temp for 3hr to give 22.4g 30(40phenylbenzoyl)-propionic acid.
