The piston ring blank is made with an outer diam. that is greater and an inner diam. that is less than that of the finished ring. A gap is cut in the ring blank to afford two free ends and is then at least partly closed by applying force only to each of the free ends. There are clamping members(20,22,25,32,60,80) to clamp one or more blanks(10), and fixing members (17,20,41,51) to fix the blanks before finishing work.
