In a hot water layer storage tank, for loading, the cold water taken out at the bottom from the storage container (10) is conveyed by means of a circulating pump (20) on the secondary side through a heat exchanger (18), and fed back, when heated, into the storage container (10) at the top. A regulating device (24) is provided in order to obtain a desired water temperature in the layer storage tank, and optimally to make use of the quantity of heat at the disposal of the heat exchanger (18) on the primary side. The desired water temperature is entered into the regulating device (24) as a control input, and the temperature, determined by a sensor (26), of the water fed back into the storage container (10) is supplied as the controlled variable. The regulating device (24) controls the rotational speed of the circulating pump (20) as the regulated condition. Further sensors (28,30) on the floor of the storage container (10) and at a predetermined height above the floor switch the loading process on and off. <IMAGE>
