Process and apparatus for the continuous production of carbon fibres

A process for the production of carbon fibres in a vertical carbonisation furnace and an apparatus for production of carbon fibres are indicated. The furnace includes a heating chamber for carbonising the carbon fibres, there being further provided in the furnace: (i) a fibre inlet (3) at the top end of the chamber, (ii) an airtightly-sealed fibre outlet (7) at the bottom end of the furnace, (iii) an inert gas inlet (6) on the chamber wall and above the fibre outlet (7), (iv) at least one inert gas injection part (8a, 8b) which is formed on the chamber wall and of which each one is able to form a curtain of an inert gas within the heating chamber (2), each injection part (8a, 8b) being provided between the gas inlet (6) and the fibre inlet (3), (v) at least one gas outlet (5), which is arranged on a bottom part of each inert gas injection part and (vi) a heating apparatus (4a, 4b, 4c), by which the temperature in the heating chamber can be adjusted in such a way that the temperature gradually increases from the top end towards the bottom end of the heating chamber. By means of the apparatus and the process claimed, carbon fibres are obtained which contain only a few cohesive or fuzzy filaments and which have an improved strength and ductility. <IMAGE>
