The invention is based on a hydraulic brake and steering brake system for motor vehicles having two main cylinders (1,2) which can be actuated individually or together, in which wheel brakes (5,6) of a vehicle axle which can be subjected to steering braking are connected to the main cylinders (1,2) and a hydraulically controllable valve arrangement (7) is connected to two valve pistons (13,21) which can be displaced counter to a control force (14,26) by means of the main cylinder pressures. By means of the valve arrangement, normally closed valve passages between the main cylinders (1,2) and the wheel brakes (5,6) of the vehicle axle which cannot be subjected to steering braking can be controlled. According to the invention, it is proposed to develop a brake system of this kind by virtue of the fact that the valve pistons (13,21) are connected one behind the other in terms of their effect and can be joined to one another and that one valve piston (13) has a larger pressure action surface and the other valve piston (21) a smaller pressure action surface, the control force which acts on the valve pistons (13,21) being preferably larger than the displacement force which can be exerted on the smaller pressure action surface. In such a design, it is advantageously ensured that a steering brake system which can be actuated by two single main cylinders with four brakable wheels is produced in which a complete compensation of pressure and volume between the wheel brakes (5,6,8,9) is obtained when the main cylinders (1,2) are actuated together. <IMAGE>
