A device for winding up and unwinding, especially of a cable for remote control of a driverless vehicle, has a drum and a pivoting arm like a cantilever. The device is suitable for automatic operation as a result of special construction of two guides for the cable. A contact device of robust construction is provided for connection between the stationary and rotating parts in the drum. One guide is provided with a sensor which influences the drum rotation speed as a function of the tensile force on the cable. <IMAGE>
