PURPOSE:A novel microorganism belonging to the genus Methylococcus, growing in an alkali side, capable of multiplying using methanol as only one carbon source, causing no problem of pollution caused by various germs, capable of supplying a raw material stably and being cultivated stably, providing a mold free from admixture of other microorganisms. CONSTITUTION:Methylococcus alkalophillus DM-1 (FERM-P 7018) belonging to the genus Methylococcus, having 7.5-11.0 growth pH and 8.5-9.5 fittest pH. In order to separate this strain from soil, for example, soil for separation is suspended well in sterilized water, allowed to stand, a small amount of the prepared suspended supernatant liquid is smeared on a flat plate medium of methanol-containing alkali agar, and cultivated for about one week at 30 deg.C. The prepared colony is isolated, smeared on the same flat plate medium again, cultivated at 30 deg.C for about one week, the prepared colony is reisolated, and grown on a slant medium having the same composition, to give a separated smear. |
