The invention relates to a coding device for a telephone answering machine, to permit remote interrogation of the telephone answering machine by the rightful user only. The telephone answering machine is coded by means of a preset code transmitter which transmits the code in the form of audio signals. The telephone answering machine automatically learns the code in this process. No code settings are required on the telephone answering machine.
