PURPOSE:To obtain tolylenediamine useful as an intermediate for synthesizing tolylene diisocyanate as a raw material for polyurethane rein, by hydrogenating catalytically dinitrotoluene while suppressing formation of unreacted nitro compounds and a nonvolatile residue component. CONSTITUTION:Palladium or palladium-platinum deposited on a lipophilic carbon having at least 100 oil absorption ratio as a catalyst is suspended in a solution of tolylenediamine in an aqueous solvent, dinitrotoluene is fed to the suspension in such a way that the retention time of dinitrotoluene fed is 4-12hr, preferably 5-20hr and the reaction is carried out at <=10kg/cm<2>G at 90-150 deg.C, preferably 5-9kg/cm<2>G and 100-130 deg.C to give the aimed substance. The reaction is carried out by a tank reactor with a stirrer. |
