PURPOSE:To prepare a hydrophobic catalyst having high activity and free from the lowering of activity, by precipitating catalytic metal particles each coated with a surfactant on the surface of a hydrophobic carrier while subjecting the surfactant to oxidative decomposition under a selected condition. CONSTITUTION:A hydrophobic carrier such as a porous polytetrafluoroethylene carrier is impregnated with an alcohol solution containing catalytic metal particles each coated with a surfactant and the coated catalytic metal particles are precipitated on the surface of the carrier. Subsequently, the supported carrier is immersed in an oxidizing agent such as an aqueous nitric acid solution with a concn. of about 7N or less and the surfactant is selectively subjected to oxidative decomposition under the catalytic action of the catalytic metal particles without losing the inherent hydrophobicity of the carrier in such a condition that the oxidative decomposition speed of the carrier itself can be disregarded as compared with that of the surfactant. By this method, a hydrophobic catalyst suitable for the promotion of hydrogen isotope exchange reaction can be prepared.
