PURPOSE:To detect the breadthwise shape of a hot rolled steel material accurately by obtaining an effective multiple-valued signal depending upon scanning outputs of plural photoelectric elements corresponding to the temperature of the hot rolled steel material, and carrying out the differentiation, binary coding and peak holding processing of the signal. CONSTITUTION:The hot rolled steel material 1 is scanned breadthwise along a scanning line 3a, and electrical signals corresponding to the temperature of the steel material are outputted from plural photoelectric elements and quantized by a quantizing circuit 10 to store a quantized signal which excludes a deep bottom part F, etc., in a memory controlled through a signal significance deciding circuit 16, memory storage range selecting circuit 17, etc. The contents of this memory are made acute by a differentiation circuit 12 to remove the influence of diffused light generated at both sides of the steel material, etc., and the signal is coded by a binary coding circuit 14 into a binary signal, which includes components resulting from the scale, overheating, etc., of the steel plate 1. The binary-coded signal is processed by a peak holding circuit 13 to obtain an accurate detection value such as the width of the front end part of the steel material 1 which corresponds to the shape of the steel material 1 and is not influenced by the scale, overheating, diffusion, etc. |
