The cage is connected to an axle (7), which is on a vertical or near vertical plane parallel to the sewing foot carrier and goes through an opening (6) in a part (5) mounted on the carrier. A spiral pressure spring (10) is located between the part (5) and the cage concentrically in relation to the axle. The axle supports a laterally projecting finger (13) above the part. The finger acts together with an indentation incorporated in the top section of the part and stays engaged in the identation when the cage is in the operating position. The top side of the part (5), which acts as a support for the axle (7) carrying the cage (9), takes the form of a ramp (16) in the section against which the finger lies between its two positions corresp. to the operating and non-operating positions of the cage. The top side features another indentation (15) at the end of the ramp in the section corresp. to the non-operating position of the cage. The spring (10) serves simultaneously as a pressure spring and a torsion spring. The sewing machine is connected to a microcontact switch (17), which is joined to the electric supply circuit of the machine and which can be operated by the finger (13) located the axle supporting the cage.
