THERMAL ENERGY STORAGE MATERIAL

PURPOSE:To provide a thermal energy storage material which shows reduced corrosive action on copper and makes it possible to use copper as material for heat exchanger, prepared by adding a specified rust inhibitor to a system consisting mainly of sodium acetate trihydrate. CONSTITUTION:The thermal energy storage material is prepared by adding benzothiazole and/or mercaptobenzothiazole as rust inhibitor to a system consisting mainly of sodium acetate trihydrate. Despite of good workability of copper, its use as material for heat exchanger in a thermal energy storage unit utilizing latent heat of fusion of sodium acetate trihydrate has so far been restricted because of strong corrosive action of the salt upon copper. Addition of the above rust inhibitor reduces corrosive action of the salt upon copper and enables the use of copper.
