PURPOSE:To enable inspection of gearing state of rack and pinion under smoothing operation by providing a rack length detecting meter on a load cylinder of smoothing machine for applying load on both ends of rack while providing a pinion rotary angle detector. CONSTITUTION:A product 1 is fixed on a smoothing machine through a supporter 4 and a clamper 5. Upon rotation of pinion of product 1 through a hydraulic motor 9, loads are applied on the rack of product 1 from above and below through upper and lower load cylinders 7, 8. Smoothing operation is performed under the state where power steering oil is supplied while oil supply is stopped in the final cycle of smoothing operation to bring the pinion rotation to low speed. At the same time, loads are removed from cylinders 7, 8 and it is rotated untill a convenient rack end stopper 2 will collide against the rack housing 1a. Here the rack end positions at the left/right cut ends are measured by rack length detecting meters 13, 14 while the pinion rotary angle from right to left cut end is measured by a rotary angle detector 12.
