PURPOSE:To center and insert a work into a shaft member such as a mandrel or the like automatically by a method wherein a work holding device, a shaft member holding device, a centering device centering the work, and an inserting device, fitting and inserting the work into the shaft member, are provided in the device. CONSTITUTION:A guide surface 11 is formed on a fixed base 10 and a slide base 12 is mounted slidably on the guide surface 11. The base 12 is provided with the work holding device 13 and the mandrel holding device 14. The frame 15 of the base 10 is provided with the centering device 16 and the inserting device 17. The base 12 is shifted along the guide surface 11 by a cylinder 18 for shifting and the work holding device 13 and the mandrel holding device 14 are positioned and held at positions corresponding to the centering device 16 and the inserting device 17 respectively while the holding device 13 is indexed at a position corresponding to the inserting device 17 when the work holding device 13 is shifted by a predetermined amount.
