A proportional valve with flow passages formed in its valve housing and influenced by a piston displaceable in the valve housing is to be developed in such a way that, at an increased useful stroke of the piston, the wear phenomena are to be reduced in such a way that long service life of the valve is achieved even when water, for example, is used as the controlled pressure medium, and the dependence of the flow through the controlled passage as a function of the piston stroke can easily be established during manufacture. This is achieved by the piston being displaceable in two equiaxial tubes whose end faces, facing one another and guided at an angle with an axial component, enclose a gap having at least one axial component. The gap is designed in such a way that the stroke of the free end face of the piston corresponds to its axial extent, and the gap is enclosed by an annular space which receives the fluid passing it.
