In order to attain hitherto unachievable, advantageous properties, a device of the generic type for packaging piece goods, having a base surface unsuitable for self-centering, for example virtually flat-ended, is improved in that the guide device has a grid arrangement, corresponding to the grid of the receptacle compartments to be filled of the transport container, of magazine compartments concentric with the receptacle compartments having at most cross-sectional dimensions of the same size as the receptacle compartments and can be lowered, with their magazine compartments filled with the piece goods to be packaged in concentric alignment with the grid arrangement of the receptacle compartments, from a magazine position for these into a packaging position in which a number of elastic guide elements, allocated in groups to each magazine compartment, are at least partially immersed with their lower ends in a respectively concentrically allocated receptacle compartment and give at least the upper edge regions of the non-dimensionally-stable grid part material forming the receptacle compartments the desired contour for the entry opening and can be returned to the magazine position again after transfer of the piece goods into the receptacle compartments, and in that a device is provided for forced positive transfer of the piece goods from the magazine compartments into the receptacle compartments.
