Parking meters are often severely damaged as a result of the theft of parking-fee money. A new parking meter serves for the direct monitoring of at most four individual parking places for passenger cars and is equipped with a waterproof and shock-resistant housing. A plurality of parking times are displayed digitally, and a photocell unit and a unitary electronic device are located in the housing. This device combines an entry check (data key or data card) for recording and processing the start of the parking time or the registration number of the passenger car with a selection unit and a read-out part, connected to this, for the visible recording of the available parking time, as well as with a program unit for time transmission and checking by means of a digital read-off, and with a battery which is fed automatically from the photocell unit located on the top side of the housing.
