To detect the bar-code edges, a photodetector is provided in an optical hand-held reader, which has two bar-shaped first and second sensor structures, arranged at a distance from one another, of light-sensitive semiconductor elements. The sensor structures are connected to an evaluating circuit which generates a signal allocated to a bar-code edge when the light-intensity-dependent output signals of the sensor structures differ by a predetermined value.
